SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Evangel University students now have two new places to get their basketball fix. The school opened three new outdoor basketball courts.
Raelin Lakatos, a junior at the university, said it was something the university had needed for some time.
“I remember my freshman year coming in and thinking I wish I had more places to hang out,” Lakatos said. “So to see all these different places, outside and inside, come true, it’s so awesome.”
The university plans to install patio seating near the courts for students to hang out with their friends. According to Evangel, patio seating should be ready in June, but that depends on how quickly preparatory work progresses.
Evangel has invested over $2 million in basement upgrades and crews are currently working on the gas and steam lines.
In the Evangel Student Union, workers are nearly done redesigning the Barracks Coffee Shop. Evangel University President Dr. Mike Rakes said all the store needed was new flooring. Dr Rakes said donations helped pay for construction and a week ago he received a check for $10,000 from the university’s first graduates.
“It’s what enhances the student’s experience outside of the classroom where they can hang out and be themselves,” Dr. Rakes said.
