In a matter of pride for the district, two female basketball players based in Ludhiana and a female coach have been selected to represent the Indian women’s basketball team in the FIBA U-16 Asian Women’s Championship 2022 to be held in Amman, Jordan from June 24 to 30.
Manmeet Kaur, captain of the Indian team, and Komalpreet Kaur, player of the Indian team, both from Ludhiana will represent the country. However, Ludhiana-based coach Saloni will coach the Indian team in Jordan.
Teja Singh Dhaliwal, Secretary General of the Punjab Basketball Association (PBA), said Punjab Sports Department coach Saloni was recently inducted as a coach by the Basketball Federation of India and had now been selected to accompany the Indian team as official coach.
Moreover, the two selected players were trained at the Ludhiana Basketball Academy.
Dhaliwal further stated that Manmeet was also the first U16 player from Punjab to captain the Indian team.
RS Gill, DGP (Retired), President of PBA, while congratulating the players and the coach, said Saloni also became the first woman from Punjab to become the coach of the Indian team to accompany the team international basketball matches.
Saloni coached the Indian team at Begalauru.
“We are looking forward to two more indoor basketball courts at Guru Nanak Stadium in Ludhiana which will attract more youngsters,” Dhaliwal said.
Meanwhile, Parminder Singh, Superintendent of Police Ludhiana, who frequently visits the basketball stadium here, said, “I am hopeful that the women of Punjab will shine in every sport played in the country.”
The PBA and District Basketball Association officials said they believe more talent will flourish from Punjab in the future.
